I’m going to be so popular…

transformersfrontbig

Who wants to touch me? Bought it for $5 from someone at work who was selling because there will be a new edition out next year that is uncensored. Apparently Spike says one bad word in it. I don’t think I’ll mind missing it. 5.1 sound to listen to all that wonderful music in surround. Proof that Megatron should be a GUN, take that Michael Bay, you tool!

Oh please no…

Megatron?!

Some preliminary art and images from the Transformers movie… It should bear mentioning that this movie is to be directed by Michael Bay of “The Rock” and “Pearl Harbor” fame, or infamy depending on your viewpoint. Megatron isn’t a gun anymore? WHAT?! I hope these are just first pass concept art and they’re moving back towards the actual Transformers. Some of the other pictures of Bumblebee, etc. don’t seem so bad. A little overdesigned, but not as badly as this.

Interesting weekend…

  • Shaved.
  • Haircut.
  • Kidnapped Ben.
  • Ben runs over to touch Percy. A lot.
  • Volleyball.
  • Lost in San Jose. Suburb hell.
  • Stupid alcohol.
  • Finding yourself draped over the toilet is a deeply moving experience. You feel low.
  • I have kind friends who take care of me.
  • Stupid alcohol makes you say and feel some crazy stuff if you let it.
  • I found that *I* don’t even know what I’m going through.
  • I wake up early for no good reason and even when it’s to my detriment.
  • Ozomatli rules Stern Grove.

Snakes on a Plane, or SoaP

OK nothing clean about snakes on a plane. Saw it at work, felt that the movie would be best with the most respectful yet fun audience you could ever find. Plus it was free.

For a movie with so much hype and effort thrown into the viral marketing, I was beginning to wonder if the movie itself would be any good. Well, it pretty much delivers exactly what you expect, a fairly brainless action thriller about snakes on a plane. I was actually pleasantly surprised, it was a fun flick! Characters were all well played (not that any of the roles were that demanding), no major plot holes or inconsistencies (so the plot wasn’t all that complex), snakes looked convincing and production values were pretty high. The filmmakers did a really good job of pushing the boundaries of the absurd and the ridiculous but I never stopped myself to say, “That’s just too much!” OK well I did but I was laughing at the same time.

62% on Rotten Tomatoes

Wally Wood’s 22 Panels That Always Work

This looks really interesting. Comics are all about creating and telling a story visually, and are designed for impact. If you think about it there is actually very little that comic artists have to work with, especially with the dailies that rely on 4 or so frames to quickly get a whole story across. You need to very quickly grab your reader and convey emotions and ideas that normally people would spend whole pages writing about. These panels would be interesting to study to apply in other disciplines as well. Always good to learn simple ways to get interesting photographs.

Those with brains, beware!

I hear rumors of a zombie attack about to descend upon San Francisco this very Saturday. If you value your sentience and your higher brain functions, even your brain itself, stay far away and run for the hills! Do you shiver in fear of the walking undead? Watch out! Zombies may come and make you one of their own, sans brains!

Go Jeff!

http://www.boingboing.net/2006/08/07/duran_duran_moves_to.html

Duran Duran have bought a virtual island in Second Life, a creative 3D multiplayer world where you can make sophisiticated objects and avatars. The band will perform live shows in-game:

“When the video revolution began we instantly saw the opportunity to experiment and explore a new form of expression to enhance the musical experience. Second Life is the future right now, offering endless possibilities for artists.”

Rhodes said he hoped the Duran Duran community would help develop the island into a “fully functional, futuristic utopia”.

He said the band was “thrilled to become citizens of Second Life”.

Boston and SIGGRAPH

sig06_1_0803_014737.jpg

Just got back from a 3 day trip to Boston and SIGGRAPH, the big yearly CGish convention in the industry. The weather wasn’t scorchingly hot, but the 60% humidity made being outside just a little miserable and sweaty. High humidity actually does a number on you thermodynamically, it basically suppresses your body’s sweat defense mechanism. Your body hopes that by sweating the droplets will evaporate, taking heat away from you. A high humidity makes it harder for sweat to evaporate since there is already a lot of water in the air, leaving you very wet and still hot. Humidity is the summer’s wind chill factor.

I spent a lot of time at SIGGRAPH at the Electronic and Animation Theaters, the showcases for the past couple year’s of work produced by the CG community. Some really awesome stuff, and pretty inspiring. Let’s see how far I get in starting any projects of my own. Also hung out a bit with Jeff as he was there helping to promote SecondLife, and I got to see a good bit of Boston as I stayed in Cambridge with Webb’s brother Dan at his place. We toured a bit as well.
