Karaoke Redux

Here I come!

More #3

IMG_5604.JPGFeeling oddly anti past couple days, due to a couple dawning realizations and being left to my own devices a bit too much. Churning up old bad in new light does not do any additional good for one’s soul, and in the end there is nothing you can do about it except learn and move on, same as the last time you went over it in your head.

To mark the occasion, another set of self-portraits! Huzzah, it’s been a little while. And yes, I did fiddle with the white balance setting a couple times.

EDIT: anti problem solved, go karaoke. And what anti was I? Well, anti-disestablishmentarian, of course. I have since come to my senses.

Scary state…

Saw these two articles over the past couple days:

Check from a scammer bounces victim into jail
Bank of America loses $50 million from customers upset by false arrest

UCLA student tasered in library

Starting to wonder what is going on in our world, that a man who innocently goes to the bank to find out if a check he has been given is fraudulent in turn gets the cops called on him for fraud, and a student who shows some resistance and civil disobedience leaving the library will be repeatedly tasered by university cops. More later…

Stand by your Tan

Absolutely amazing on so many horrible levels. So Tan Nguyen is this Republican candidate for the House (I think) down in Orange County. Earlier it was found that his office sent thousands of fliers out to the Latino community in the area, saying that if you are an immigrant, not just an illegal immigrant, you cannot vote. Note that immigrants can become citizens and can then legally vote, so someone was trying to intimidate these voters into not making it to the polls. It is amazing what people think they can get away with these days, how fucked up is their idea of democracy that they think they can do these things with a clear conscience?

Tan received a lot of well-deserved flack for this. He really has no more official support. Yet he continues to run, despite calls for him to step down from his own Republican colleagues. This video is from a rally held for him. If you couldn’t stomach the karaoke, the fishnet stockings and short, poofy skirt wearing lady, she’s singing “Stand by your Tan”, their own take on “Stand by your Man”.

I can’t even begin to enumerate what is so bizarre about this… The mere fact that he is still running is one, despite being outed as racist and wholly unscrupulous. That there is a community of Vietnamese people who will support him probably for the mere fact that he is also Vietnamese. There’s so much cultural graduate thesis fodder in just looking at the situation, running an Asian political rally from the back of a truck with a karaoke singer in a horrible outfit, my mind is jammed with questions and a very powerful sense of WTF?! that I can’t begin to resolve.

I think there are times when the idea of voting, because it is so simple an idea, becomes divorced from the concept of responsibility in exercising that right, which is ultimately much more complex and really difficult to wrap your head around.

Pervasive!

You really can’t go anywhere to any major event in San Francisco anymore without seeing every other person touting their dSLR toys.

Two movies…

I should really stop trying to search for traditional elements in the movies I watch. Things like plot or storytelling. Saw two movies this week, very different in how I received them and could appreciate one but not the other.

Nice to see my little community make the news, saw this on Boing Boing today:

Naked man arrested on weapon charge
Indecent exposure suspect near El Cerrito BART station had a screwdriver hidden within body cavity, police say
